I've been drunk many times and never performed the despicable act of putting brave mens lives at risk by making a prank call. The lowlife should be given a suspended jail sentance pending completion of one year as a member of the lifeboats... on second thoughts they probably wouldn't have him.
We should, but in the great scheme of things people are immensely dim and the sort of people who make hoax calls probably never read papers or watch the news.
For instance. We get people parking entirely on the pavement in Bowness, blocking it off, and then looking in disbelief when they get a Fixed Penalty Notice. Their reasoning is that they "didn't want to narrow down the road by parking on the road"
These are grown-up people who seemingly know nothing about the laws regarding the lethal machines they are driving.
So the idea that people would know anything whatsoever about the possibility that making a hoax call is illegal is pretty optimistic.

Firstly, I dont believe that many wont understand and, even if they dont understand, you dont punish them????
We should do whatever is necessary to help them to understand... and a night in a police cell, being hauled up before the court, then being imprisoned for while would be a pretty quick education for most.
Next time they would think twice about making the call.
I'm sick and tired of people being excused for breaking the law for some crazy reason like education, upbringing, society failing them....
Unless mentally deficient, everyone knows when something is wrong, and everyone has the choice as to whether to do something, or not.
If you cant do the time dont do the crime!
If you get drunk and commit crimes you wish you hadnt... Dont Get Drunk!!
I take it from that little rantlet that you are under the illusion that I think we should let people off. If you read my post again I am explaining that people don't understand what is right and what is wrong.
Therefore they will do the stupid thing and then wail they have been unfairly treated.
The people who would benefit from educating will normally be watching Noel Edmonds or I'm a Tosspot or somesuch on tele'.
Those who do see or read the information would probably already know it.
It's frightening when the TV shows VoxPop polls taken in the street how ignorant many people are. (or should that be "how many people are ignorant"?)
If all hoax call offenders were given the guaranteed opportunity to be a member of a lifeboat crew, it would be mayhem with hoax callers ringing the phones off the hooks at MRCCs all around the country...... That is far too good a 'punishment' - I think Cliff's idea re keel hauling is much more appropriate......

The two statements mean very different things, but both are equally true.
Most of these responses fall foul of the "String 'em up - it's the only language they understand" fallacy, much beloved by certain sections of the popular press (usually those aimed at the ignorant morons lambasted in these posts).
I presume that most of you would agree that the best outcome of any system employed would be deterrence rather than retribution. Research indicates that it is not the severity of punishment that acts as a deterrent, but rather the perception of the probability of getting caught.
Minor punishments certain to be suffered are more effective deterrents than major punishments rarely applied.
Mind you, one has to ensure that the aforementioned morons are very likely to be caught and then that they are aware of this.
You present a very balanced and informed case Bob .However I am not completely moved from my position of agreeing with the"string them up ,its the only language they understand"camp.
Yeah you're probably right actually - why should parents take any responsibility for their own kids. They're far too busy posting on forums to be bothered teaching their kids right from wrong. Much better to have someone else to blame - that way you never have to take responsibility for your own actions.
I blame God and the yacht club for the damage to my boat coming in to the pontoon on the windward side, one for putting the wind where it was, the other for not padding the pontoon - certainly couldn't have been my fault - or maybe the bloke who taught me on my day skipper course was at fault. Hmmmm!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I was going to say something about teachers but didnt get around to it.
There is no question but that parents have a responsibility to teach right from wrong, but teach have a responsibility for education.
IIRC, Bob was talking about an ability to understand things, and this is partly to do with education.
However, it is not necessarily the teachers at fault for the failings of the education system...
The fact is that the government need to be able to tell us that education standards are improving year on year, so they have dumbed down the exam standards and made it so that teachers are monitored on the basis of the success of the pupils. As a result, the whole education system is now geared towards making kids look better than they are, relative to the standards of the past.
A mate of mine who is a teacher suggests that we are going to have a generation of badly educated parents, and this will be reflected in future generations until we get a grip.
