Should we be worried about Jeanne Socrates

Looking hopeful that autopilot data problems are now solved. Interesting on her blog how big a part of day to day life ham radio is. Few miles yet to get north again out of the southern Ocean.

About 1500 miles to get past NZ..... and she has to sail 500 miles south east ( about 4 degrees of Lat ) to get under Tasmania.....

If you want a Northern comparison think Biscay in November....

Rather more like Newfoundland to Iceland, in November. Biscay's under 400nm....

She's some chicken! Do have a read of her latest blog-post here

Jeanne is in a bad place now but seems still committed to going South to get around the 'great cape ' of Tasmania.

I don't know which will be worse, South of Tasmania or the strait between Tasmania and Australia.

Still with no mainsail and little chance of a calm spell to finish the repair and get it from the cabin to the mast and hoist it.

Around 2330 BST Sunday 28 April...

JS has hauled her JSD drogue with difficulty, and is now slowly heading SE towards the bottom of Tassie. here

This looks like a typical autumn/winter weather pattern.... and hopefully brings drought breaking rains to SE Australia... http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/charts/4day_col.shtml

But not so good if one is at sea west of Tasmania...

I have had a look at both models for the next week on Windy and both are how you say? ...interesting?

Low comes over the top of you.. can go from NW to SE or SW just like that..

BoM only forecasts out 3 days..http://www.bom.gov.au/tas/forecasts/centralwestcoast.shtml

Half way between Tas & NZ, bet she'll be glad to turn left!

"The best sailing blog!"

Keep wondering about how many mainsail slides she has in the track, now. I suppose the problem is the weight of the sail. Clearly it's not practical to use the halyard and hoist it - but it might be possible to get a tyer round the top of the sail as far down as the first slide still out, and use the halyard to take some of the weight.

Should we be worried? Yes I think so.....
Has she had take the trysail off the track or does she have a second track for it?

'*** STORM WARNING IN FORCE ***
North of West Cape: Northwest 40 knots, easing to southwest 25 knots late evening. Elsewhere: Northwest 60 knots, becoming southwest 45 knots in the afternoon. Sea very high in the south, easing. Southwest swell rising to 8 metres. Poor visibility in showers.'

NW 60 backing SW 45 will give the sort of confused sea that most can not even imagine.....

I have spent a few minutes looking at pictures and whilst I haven’t found a very clear one I don’t see a separate try sail track.

Correction; I found a video. If I was clever I could do a screen shot. There is a trysail track to port of the main track, down to deck level. I’m not clever enough to do a screen shot but the video is here:

Common sense suggests a pit stop. There's nothing wrong that can't be fixed in a few days in port, but there are things that can't be fixed at sea.

I would tend to agree with you but perhaps she has got herself mentally committed a sort of summit fever. I hope she does stop and sort things out though because it is seeming like an ever worsening situation which can only go on for so long before the inevitable happens.

She's a very resourceful skipper, and certainly among the half-dozen most experienced blue/grey-water sailors.
I wouldn't think her decision-making skills were in any way impaired.

Edit: Here's a link to her latest, post-knockdown blog report. Her story-post following the KD is, of course, lower down. One gets the sense of a very tough bird now in 'defensive mode'.

She still has her JSD. It 'self-deployed'. It's a real pity she had to let go her second PV panel. She still has comms, and is communicating OK..... for now. There's another heavy system coming on shortly.
