Should I rivet old holes in my boom?

The usual reason for old masts to fail at fittings when the rigging doesn't is catastrophic galvanic corrosion of the mast hidden by the fitting.

That is just a touch bigger than a rivet hole.

A 6mm rivet hole on the maybe 250mm circumference of 75mm diameter boom is small fry by comparison. Square holes are a slightly worse matter as points of stress failure at the corner

I know. That's why it's the normal cause of an old mast failing when it fails at a fitting like the gooseneck or spreaders; it's not caused by a rivet hole.
