That is just a touch bigger than a rivet hole.The usual reason for old masts to fail at fittings when the rigging doesn't is catastrophic galvanic corrosion of the mast hidden by the fitting.

A 6mm rivet hole on the maybe 250mm circumference of 75mm diameter boom is small fry by comparison. Square holes are a slightly worse matter as points of stress failure at the corner
