Should I replace the filters when I change the oil in my gearbox?

Last job to do on the boat is to change the oil in the gearboxes Dexron II (KAD300, HS63AE-A gearbox). I can do this reasonably easily through the filler hole, but should I change the oil filter as well? I'm not even you can still buy these.

Any advice?

My gearbox has a wire mesh filter which I soak in either petrol or white spirit each year. I change the Auto Transmision Fluid in the gear box every other year.

I always pull the filters out then place the vacuum tube down through the hole under where the filter sits to extract the oil, you get right to the bottom of the gearbox this way. Then refill with oil through the filter hole as its easier than trying to get it through the dipstick hole, then when the level is correct fit the new filter, run up and recheck level.

slight drift but the answer might help the OP too. Mine is a screw in plastic level gauge and I never know whether to take the level reading screwed in or just placed in unscrewed. Its a Hurth ZF 63 A 2.5. Any views?

I fill it until it just reaches the bottom of the pin with it unscrewed, then its sure to be between the marks with it screwed in.

Ok I will do that. Now where can I get the best price on 6 liters of Dexron II?

Opie Oils do good prices and they deliver to your home, failing that your local motor factors supply it.
