Should I leave well alone?

!'ve decided not to change my Volvo shaft seal. Although it will be 5 years old this spring, it does not leak and I've only done about 200 hours motoring in the last 5 years. I'm also wondering about the cutless bearing which is the original one, and is 12 years old. The play is less than 1mm.
What does the team think, please?

I've a club launch that has over 4000 hours on the Volvo seal and cutless bearing (in a "P" bracket) and it still doesn't leak or wobble!

The rudder stock is a different matter?

I had a boat for eight years that had a Volvo seal which I was told was already five years old when I bought her. It did not leak at all and looked as good as new with no cracks or crazing on the outside when I eventually sold her. That is thirteen years good service. I did pack it well with grease each year.

I think Volvo are protecting themselves legally by saying they should be replaced every five years, plus it is good business.

Does anyone have any experience of a Volvo seal failing?

only once - it started to drip so replaced it - 14 years old

leave it until it drips i'd say - it won't just let go.

Ours will be 17 years old this year, and so far has behaved impeccably - it's never leaked, never burped, seems happy with some grease squished in once a year.
