Well yet again my heater has been condemed /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Words like "it's not designed for Marine use" and "it's not suppose to run on red diesel" and the fact that Eberspacher don't give a fig.

So now I'm faced with a problem: What do I replace it with?

Another eberspaeche or a Webasto or a Mikuni?

Mikuni don't make a big enough unit - I have 47ft to heat and need 5Kw output min.

So the choice is another D5C Airtronic or a Air Top 5000.

The Webasto apeals but will cost me twice as much as the Ebber as I need to fit all new ducting, fuel, exhaust etc.

Have Ebber got any better recently or are they stil crap.

What do people think? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Sailorman - why did you change?

I've looked at the MY30 but it's rated at 3.4kw and I think I need at lest 5kw output. Mikuni say I should fit 2 heaters but that i snot an option I want to consider. So th echoice has come down to webasto or ebber.

Trouble is webasto use much smaller ducting than the ebber so believe i need to change everything.

i dont understand this, eber is one of the best bits of kit you can buy, not designed for marine use? bollox!
i suspect your dealer is the one who is not designed for marine use.
i have had mine running problem free now for 5 years, it is fixed inside the sugar scoop of my bene, by me by the way, it starts when i switch it on, it runs for days at a time if needed, quite what red diesel has to do with it i dont know. mine has run on red for 5 years as above. suspect the dealer is the prob not the machinery

Well, lots of Ebers and Webby's are fitted in trucks & motorhomes. They look like the marine ones, but have much shorter exhausts and outlet ducting in most cases. They also do not need s/s skin fittings. Perhaps you have one of those?

that's what I thought. So I took the boat last year to another dealer (160Nm round trip) and got the same story and I've just had a similar message today from a 3rd dealer now. I've come to the conclusion that it's ebber themelves but then lots of folks in here swear by them.

I had a ebber on my sigma whic worked for 7 years including 3 livingaboard all year in Norway!

So I confused................

I had a ebersplutter on the last boat - new one packed up and after the third enginner callout they changed the unit and it seemed ok, bad experience and expensive because they started to say that the installation wasn't suitable - after they installed it!

anyway now bought a webasto self installed which is easy to do but hard work routing/drilling the ducting.

I think that the ducting for the eber you had should be ok for the webo, it's only tube. If you have the fuel pipe already then just connect the webo pump and pipe even the exhaust may fit (not sure about that though)

As for the webasto - it coked up last week after 18 months of hard graft so it was strip down time, easy done with a star drive screwdrive and a spanner:

My Eberspacher was installed in 1999 and is fine. We liveaboard but we don't use it for everyday heating but it probably gets as much annual use a typical leisure boater would (yes, we do have a heating season in southern Spain!). I'm very pleased with it. That's the cue for it to blow up next time I turn it on, and wish I hadn't opened my big mouth /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Another vote for our eber. We bought it new and installed it EXACTLY as per the instructions and we are now in our third year and its never failed yet. (Actually that's not true, but I can't blame the heater for my running our of diesel!!) It went again as soon as I topped the tank up.

When we are ashore in the winter I leave it to heat the boat three or four times a week. It does this without complaint for six months. So far so good.

interested in these comments - our eber packed up in year one for us (came with 2nd hand boat) and local eber dealer tested and ended up replacing the silver electronic box (£2oo if if remember) and since then worked fine until this year when it has thrown a wobbly - no longer goes through phased cooldown instead stops immeditely (fan and all) as soon as temp reached - spoke to eber at soton show- chap volunteered to run test on it at eber importers ho if i drop it in so intend to do so during winter - hope it is repairable at sensible price as useful bit of kit!

mmm, Ian I remeber you fitting your Webasto, just about the same time I fitted my Ebber. Yours needs decoking eh? Mine shows no sign of needing to be done yet, it too has had fairly heavy use.

Having said all this, I'll confirm the situation after this weekend, on the boat! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

What makes you say the Webasto uses smaller ducting?
Ours starts at 90mm and then 80mm for the whole lot (apart from a couple of branches of 60mm).
Peter at Webasto's UK place is their marine guy. Worth a chat.

Try a Hurricane we have had ours for 18 months, very economic, 3/4ltrs an hour running 5 radiators. Why rads? I found it easier installing 1/2" water pipes than larger air ducting. Also no noise of air from ducts. so far very pleased - try either Calcutt Boats or Hurricane Heaters on web. Me not connected with either, just v. pleased.
