Should I buy a 2-stroke?

Not that I am against 2 stroke explicitly, but I have no wish to go back to seeing the streak of pollution pouring out from behind my tender..

I'm of the opinion that the last generation of two strokes together with the advances made in oil technology are much better. My Mariner 3.3 doesn't leave a trail. (note to self..Check when warmer weather arrives)

Maybe, the engine I dumped was bought 2nd hand and was eating spark plugs at silly rates. I tried different oil mixtures and hotter / colder plugs without joy. I had damaged the fuel tank and the petrol tap would leak if it wasn't just in the right position. I was using daft amounts of fuel.. It was time for a change.

I went 4T as above, but also the messing with oils, having to have a tub of oil in the car and on the boat, having to keep a stock of spark plugs, I just fancied the cleanness of 4 stroke.

I think being a catamaran helped too, it is not a big problem to keep the outboard upright, so that was one off the tick list.

I probably would have bought 2T if I could find one that did the mix during the input rather than having to 'shake the damn can'. Why, if lawn mowers can feed oil from a reservoir can't outboards. That would have swung it for me.

I find the 4T takes far longer to come up to temp, as the winter gets colder I am having to re-learn choke control.. Would an auto choke be so difficult, they are generally really simple devices!

I guess each option cost valuable oz.

2 strokes are only not sold in the marine retail trade. They are still allowed for commercial use.... Go figure that one out...

That applies to traditional 2 strokes, as they can't be made compliant.

2 Strokes are still legal to buy for the Retail trade, provided they meet the new emission laws, which the Direct Injection 2 strokes do.
Look here Mariner Optimax
and here E Tec advert
Tohatsu is another example of new 2 strokes that are available.
All these are Direct injection.

It's the old carburettor 2 strokes that can't meet the emission regs.
