As many of you may not know I'm in the process of selling a catamaran. I had one interested offer but, to be frank, it was from a dodgy sounding Serth Africaan. So I tentatively said yes but was'nt sure until he came up with the deposit I asked. He was a bit rude, but I took that as being part of the national character and told him to sling it as I had a better offer, even though I had'nt. In the meantime an old gentleman put in a slightly better offer anyway but said he had an elderly motorsailor with a working eberspacher to sell before he could give me the required deposit. In the mean ime the SA guy has been phoning me every day muttering obscenities in a slightly endearing way and I'm beginning to warm to him as he offers more of his hard earned every time. What should I do?

Is payment being offered in cash, or cauliflowers ? If veggies, will you be cooking the books ?

Are you going to put a covenant on the sale deeds that repainting will be restricted to approved colours ?

The advantage of selling it to Seth Efrikan is that he will buggeroff to some poxy little malaria-infested ports in places without reliable telecoms, and you'll never hear from him again as he slumps in a sweating heap, slaking his raging thirst with gin and quinine.

OTOH, the elderly gent will forever be on the electric telephone, whining on and on about merchantable quality, fitness for purpose, unsutability of the vessel as a platform for catching mullet, malfunctioning cabin heaters, holding tanks and rudder, and asking if you'd mind popping up with your toolbox.

I'd vote for a quiet life, and flog it to Seth.

Get it genuine hard folding currency - not merely advice from the bank that they have received payment - 'cos that's how the Nigerian scams work.

If there's paperwork it pays to express absolute clearance before parting with the boat. -

PS beware if he sends you more money than you agreed - that's part of the classic scam!!

The Serf Afrikaaner has now offered me more than the asking price as long as I stock it up with Fray Bentos .. he's sending me the money plus a security deposit through Western Union, the olg geezer has given me the Motor Sailor in part exchange as well as his two holiday timeshares in Turkey and has apparently remortgaged C*****e Towers. Help how do I get out of this. I'll have to buy another catamaran to give to one of them!

Why not sell it on Ebay, if you specify Nigerian bids welcome I'm sure you will get lot's of offers /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'd stear clear, sounds like a new twist on the old scam.
Deposits through Western Union is the same way as the scams in the past.
I read somewhere that, apparently Western Union transfers can bounce several weeks alter the bank have told you that they have cleared, the bank then recover the money from you and you're left with nothing.

Hi There.
I got scammed out of £200 with Western Union, so I would beware. It would apear that some of the people working in WU are in on it, as I asked for passpert verification before the money was handed over. Needless to say, the money was given over (apparently) without the receiver even being checked!!
Beware!!!
Rgds, DaveT
