Shotley marina

Hi, New to the forum and just purchased boat currently at Shotley, looking for secure berth for 2011. Noted the comments re the long trek down the river but has anyone got experience/views of Ipswich Neptune Marina, crew want easy acces to shops etc!!. Seems noise may be a problem what about boat security and general service, I live quite a distance from the area.

Hi Trevor,

We were in Neptune before moving to Shotley a few years ago.

I was never worried about boat security, and the trip up the river is very much a personal factor that some are fine with and some not...

For us though, the noise was a real problem. We were woken up at 2am on a Saturday morning one too many times in the end by drunks coming home. Saying that, there are now a series of Student buildings there in place of what used to be a carpark, so that may have made matters better (or worse!)

On the plus side, access to the shops of Ipswich is fantastic.

Final point... When we were there, the Marina office operated quite limited hours, so if you arrived late and needed assistance you were out of luck.

Personally I liked the staff, but wouldn't go back primarily due to the noise

Maybe Haven's worth a look?
Away from the crowd/passers by - but not that far from the shops.

we were in Neptune until recently - good marina, great access to the town. Toilets / showers a little detatched from the pontoons but always clean and modern. Marina office keeps slightly unusual hours so if you want a face to face conversation you have to plan it in advance but I'd definitely recommend Neptune if in the wet dock (although I've only ever heard good things about Haven too).

Thanks for the replies to my post, after much discussion over the last few days we have decided to stay at Shotley. We have sailed from there a number of times and found it very friendly, boatyard has also proved very helpful during purchase process.
Keen to meet people and be involved in all that is going on at Shotley will keep an eye on the forum postings.

Regards :)

If you want to be involved Trevor then it would be a good move to join Shotley Point Yacht Club, lots of social stuff and cruises, plus no bloody racing which does make for a very friendly athmosphere.

Can we ask what boat you purchased ?

Not into racing (to much like hard work) so like the idea of a none racing yacht club. After many weeks finally came together just before Christmas and bought BACCHUS needs a little work which is scheduled in early Jan.

Is there a function to start off the new season and a chance to meet people

The first big(gish) event will be the fitting out supper. See http://www.shotleypyc.co.uk/
forall details.

After what seems a long time since I started thinking of moving to Shotley, Seaspray will be going there tonight. Berth H7 apparently.

Hope to catch up with those of you already there soon. Feel free to make yourselves known when you see me - I've always got a beer or two on the boat... :)

With an invitation like that, you'll need one or two crates!

Hope you enjoy the marina. The biggest drawback is the time taken for locking in/out. Please help to cut the time down by always motoring at a brisk pace up and down the channel - there may be boats waiting for you to clear the lock.

As you look towards the far end of the marina, you will see our boat, almost directly behind you. A motorboat named Lewci, forum burgee flying up top. We're normally half tidy when we come in and out, but keep plenty of fenders on that end, just in case :)

We'll be heading there shortly and will be there all weekend (in and out, no doubt). Give us a wave or pop over and say "hi".

The Baths are there but the Shower heads have been changed and are a disappointment.
You now get damp instead of wet.
My crew have now changed their favorite marina to Titchmarsh.
