Waiting List

Been on the waiting list for last 4 years .. Sold the boat and bought another .. Moved house and still were at the bottom of the list ..

Must be hundreds of sailors who have a better story than ours ..

Anyway if we ever get offered a berth we may have a mini auction :rolleyes:

Have now moved to Burnham .. :D

Maybe the SYH waiting list is just that - a list where you wait, and wait, and wait, and wait...

Stopped by several times this year - also noticed the empty berths - several of which would have suited us.
Enquired within - no vacancies - maybe they could fit me in over winter, but a permanent berth would not be possible. Was I on the waiting list?

I really don't believe that any of them have a structured waiting list and a quick letter to the MD (as I did) can get things moving for you. It would drive me mad if I owned that business and my spaces were not being fully utilised.

To be honest I had given up any hope of getting a berth through the waiting list long ago. Like other posters I have made enquiries in person about vacancies but the response has always been there was no space (apart from during the winter months) and was I on the waiting list?

Maybe some things are never meant to be. :)

It might be, that if you turn up in a boat with an open cheque book to secure a berth you will get in. I understand that they are feeling the pinch of people struggling to pay berthing.

On the other hand they seem to be unusually unhelpful or incompetent. I moved in for the winter, was then told that the berth I was in was to be dredged and I would have to move the boat, as the yard couldn't/wouldn't. I moved it to an empty berth they said was available, only to find that between them telling me I could move to it and me moving, they had assigned it to someone else. He was understandably upset that I was in his berth when he came back just as I was about to depart for home. I moved again, found that the power was then a 32 amp plug rather than 16. I changed my plug over, plugged in and found no power. By which stage I was running very late and there were no staff about. Numerous calls to SYH during the week to ensure that power was back on before the big freeze, brought no response, until I managed to speak to the MD, on Thursday evening, as temps began to plummet.

Not sure that I will be using them again next year, it is too much hassle. Ipswich Haven are more friendly, easier to get to, and in the winter, the distance from the sea isn't so important.
 
When we moved to Burnham we had just got settled into our berth when they said they would be dredging and we would need to move. However, they said they would take care of it all and let us know by email that all was sorted. Very helpful and pleasant they were.
 
Shotley is brilliant, simples. Not the cheapest, but hard to beat as a full package. The staff are brilliant and the yard efficient. ABout to start our second season ...
