I use wifi in the marina and networked at work - but I have to return to the north of scotland in dec for a couple of weeks and want to know from the learned panel what is the cheapest way of connecting please?
Is it better to just go for a freebie ISP through a land line or what? I have been away quite a while but am sure the laptop will still work there!!

the 'freebie isp' died the death some time back, freeserve et al couldn't make it pay so they went over to a pay system. you can get short term access paid for by premium rate phone lines or there are of course internet cafes. our local library gives free broadband access for up to an hour a day.

Cheapest for short term is probably Library or internet cafe as previously stated. Howver other options are mobile phone, GPRS or 3G, bith quite pricey though but probably the most convenient in terms of availability.

Alternatively, as you have a wifi enabled laptop, then you should be able to get wifi access in some coffee shops and hotels for a daily charge. Cost over mobile will vary depending on how much data you use but speed will be faster.
