just telephoned Port Solent marina (for those who don't know it it is at top of Portsmouth Harbour with lock access) to check their fuel berth is open as I want to refuel for winter afloat and asked if ok once I have refuelled to leave my boat for a short while on the outside lock waiting jetty whilst I pop to their shops - yes that's fine they say but will be subject to short stay charge of £0.95 per metre !! ie around £10!

A charge is clearly justifiable during peak season and for berthing within the locked harbour but £10 for a shop n fuel stop in winter and staying on their outside lock waiting pontoon - in my view a complete rip off- do you agree?

by contrast I believe if I call in by car driving by - car park charge - NIL!

Presumably to bertholders from other Premier Marinas? I believe MDL have a similar deal for their bertholders.

You should just have done it without asking. They're not going to come out of their office to chase you...

I have attempted to get serious answers to this question before but without success. Marinas in the UK seem to have us by the short and curlies when it comes to a short stop ie 24/36 hrs. What's that funny shaped lump of metal hanging from a bit of chain and rope on the front of your boat? and where can you drop it? Southampton Water springs to mind. Where are the approved anchorages??

They put the facilities there. That cost money. They maintain the facilities. That also costs money. They are not a charity, so charge for the use of these facilities.

If you don't want these facilities, nor be charged for them, you can always swim ashore?

The gate at the top of the pontoon which gives access to the marina has a coded lock so once you're through you can't get back unless you know the code.

if you have a bilge keeler or a cat just wave nicely to the HBR master at Beaulieu as you go past disappear up round the next three bends and drop your anchor, its very pleasant especially when the tide goes out as you are high and dry and safe as houses..........keith
