Does this need renewing every 5 years (VHF or later DSC type), like the ICC?The RYA ite does not make it clear.

Thanks I have the lifetime ship radio cert but I have mislaid the VHF Cert. Presumably to get a copy cert(if they do a copy) which I need to charter I will have to re-join the RYA at £45!

You don’t need to be an RYA member to get a VHF operator’s certificate.

Pete

Good question though. If you lost your operators certificate how would you get a replacement if you needed one. Are there records anywhere or would you have to retake the test?

It is a good question; I just know that joining the RYA isn’t part of the answer ;)

Like all important documents, I have a scanned copy of my operator’s certificate on my computer (and therefore its backups). I would hope this would be sufficient to get a replacement issued if needed. But yep, I don’t know for sure what the process is.

Maybe this helps? (maybe not relevant)

Perhaps you will have to take the one day course and sit again?

You can use this online process to declare a lost/stolen/damaged RYA Course Completion Certificate issued originally by ScotSail, and order a replacement. It costs £25.00 per RYA Certificate and it takes around 7-10 days to receive it from the time you submit your application

I suggest phoning the RYA. Surely you are not the first person to have misplaced the vhf operators certificate.

I think the Ofcom ships license may need to be updated every 5 years to keep it from being deleted. Checking it annually to make sure all equipment is included such as AIS and radar and contact details is up to date is not a bad plan and each review starts the 5 year validity again. I print up a copy to keep in my file on the boat.

I replaced my certificate via the RYA a few years back. Simple process, fill in the form here https://www.rya.org.uk/training-support/Documents/DOL_SRC.pdf send it off with the appropriate payment and they’ll send you a new certificate within a few days.

Does that also apply to the loss of a certificate not issued by the RYA.
Mine was issued long before the RYA became involved and if I lost it I would not know the number or the date of issue.
I suppose I should scan it or photocopy it.

I bet I would have to take the test because mine is pre DSC and I don't think they issue non-DSC licences now
