All the stumpy aerials used mostly on racing boats are pretty good. I have had one for the last seven years and it seems pretty bullet proof to me. Good reception etc. Simply never had any probs !

Hi!

Yep! Agreed. Been on my boat for about 5 years - no noticeable difference fom the previous full size one, good reception and no problems.

Good sailing!

there is a relationship between the length of an antenna and the way it propagates the signal.

a long antenna puts out most of its power in a disc at right angles to the axis. this is good for power boats and cats as most of the power goes parallel to the sea. the down side is that if the boat heels, most of the power goes into the water or the sky.

a short antenna distributes its energy more evenly. you don't get as strong a signal in the horizontal plane but at other angles there is more than with a long one so it is better for sailing monos. the very short one on a hand-held is nearly omnidirectional.

manufacturers quote 'gain' figures which are bigger for longer antennas- it refers to the horizontal output.

Pacific do a nice little VHF antenna.
It is a flexi whip so less prone to snapping too.
Is about 6-8 inches in length.

S M Group bring them into the UK and will have a dealer near you.

Speak to James or Nick on 01752 241000

Hope thart helps
