I'm looking for somewhere near to Brighton as a potential site for a 36'; preferably pontoon walk-on walk-off, hard standing for winter maintenance and good quality riggers etc who will undertake the work I can't at a reasonable rate, also with good facilities (shower block, local shop like a Tesco Express). Shoreham has been suggested by a work colleague and I was wondering if any of you have any knowledge / experience of being based there?

I used to Dinghy sail out of Shoreham - Sussex Sailing Club.

When you enter the harbour you can turn either right or left.

Left takes you up river - pretty shallow and dries out - I don't think suitable for a 36'

Right takes you into the basin - where the ships load timber and the like - at the far end is a lock into Lady Bee Marina - this is where the bigger yachts go - Its a pretty small place - again I'm not sure about a 36'er further up the "canal" from Lady Bee apparently you can berth a bigger craft - up to 100'

Have a look at the plan and see if that helps

Definitely nothing suitable up the river - all drying (and a waiting list anyway).
Through the lock, you wouldn't get a yacht club deep mooring without joining and waiting many years!
I don't know for sure if there is any availability at Lady Bee at the moment, I don't think so. Facilities don't compare to Brighton Marina and you have the nuisance of the lock, but it is cheaper. No riggers etc., just Barnes chandlery.
Is Newhaven any good to you if you don't like Brighton?

Bite the bullet and go for Thornham Marina, Wilsons Yard, Hayling Yacht Co' or Emsworth Marina in Chichester harbour - infinitely better place to be, but check tidal access at some of these ( large fin keelers settle happily in soft mud once in ).

One foot East of Chichester = grot shallow characterless coastline with dodgy ports to match !

Shoreham might not be a good place for a yacht. Sails, topsides and deck will slowly get a dull gray/rusty stain due to nearby traffic and ships.

The same happens in Newhaven harbour due to the nearby scrap yard. The wind blows the metal dust over the marina and the rain does the rest, white boats get a rusty colour overall.
