Previous posts have dissed my home port. Yes it's scruffy, it's a working commercial port. Yes the Lady Bee is not much cheaper than Brighton, and the facilities suck. But the club has sorted theirs, and there are good pubs, shops and a launderette and railway in walking distance.

I think the swans are sweet, and quite tame. Useless security. Check out the cameras and the live-aboards. That's as good as most marinas.

And the small lock has a floating pontoon, and kind operators! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
 
Shoreham's a great spot to stop. We usually stop there each summer either out or back on our way from the East Coast to where you can see through water.

It's a real harbour. There are reasonable shops and a train station a short walk away. Lock keepers are helpful and friendly. The real advantage however is that its not Brighton.
 
The Ship, turn right at the lights, just past the railway bridge.
The Schooner (on the harbour) is in new hands, and we have high hopes of it returning to its former glory - a view through the window of ships passing close enough to throw a beer mat at cannot be denied, and the music's back on Thursday nights, a good thing for some, perhaps not so for others, though it will finish by half eleven. The Cala is fun on a sunny afternoon, and their grub is good in a tex-mex way.
Walk over the lockgates and in five minutes you have Carrot's cafe, fry ups in the day, class food at night. Good value.
The Pilot and the Cricketers are a bit plastic, but you can fill up on steak and chips at the Pilot quite edible and under a fiver.

OK, can't think of any more - Downtown Shoreham however has the Wellington, the Sovereign, the Marlipins, the Toad ...... etc
And the Sussex Yacht Club, with media star Hosine in charge!
And the Waterside (known previously as the Lady Jane) just over the footbridge on Shoreham Beach

Oh dear, we usually only stay a night. If we are going to get round those we will be there for days.

By the way the other under-rated harbour along there is Newhaven. Similar range of local facilities (including a paper shop, which sells ice), but with a scrap-metal reclamation dock to frighten off those who prefer the shopping mall charm of Brighton.
 
I rest my case,no decent pubs within walking distance,The Schooner should be a really good pub but has never quite made it.
Agreed on SYC,give Hocine my regards when youre next in.

This abomination is within view of my berth!. But rumours abound that it will soon be gone as development approaches.
 
(sorry to drift the thread but this is holiday business and so of cosmic importance)

Rabbie, is it true that they have stopped dredging Newhaven? I was hoping to do an overnight stop there around early July (and have dinner at the Villa Adriana). Will I be able to get 1.5m draft round and into the vistors' "berth" near LW do you think?
 
Middle distant moment - my first sail 54 years ago was from Shoreham to France and back. Still so incredibly vivid. How to get hooked...

I have only been in the port for a few weeks and have not had much time to get acquainted with local knowledge yet. As the ferries still run to Dieppe, I assume the fairway is still dredged. As for the marina by the Villa, I can't comment, as I am berthed upriver of the bridge on Denton Island. I should be down at the weekend and I will enquire for you.
 
Newhaven is regularly dredged (and a round of dredging has just completed). However, there is a major building programme just starting to turn it into a 'proper' marina, blocks of apartments and all. As part of that, Villa Adriana is designated for demolishment and has shut down.

Shame - they have done that to Ipswich docks just near where I live. These places are going to end up like high streets; all the same. Pity about the Villa Adriana too. Have to be boil in the bag rice that night...
