any idea what this kind of connector is called?

The pic Jimmy posted is same as mine. I took mine apart because my shore power tripped and wouldn't reset, turned out there was no water tight seal in the end of my plug and water had run down cable in to plug. I stripped plug (got shock) dried in front of heating outlet then re-assembled...no trip after drying out.

I was surprised there was no seal where cable enters the plug, so water proof tape has been wrapped around to seal and I've made mental note to loop cable so water doesn't drip down cable in to plug.

Completely fried! Now to find a supplier who actually carries this part....not got much hope for a solution prior to the long weekend. Still, plenty of fuel and the genny seems to be working well :)

If anyone knows who would keep these in stock then please shout and thanks for all the help :)

You need to look inside the fitting to work out exactly what's gone on.

Agreed Jimmy, I have just spoken to our local marine Sparks, Bob Orchard, (really good guy), and he will investigate. I will look to have the connection stepped down to a regular 32a as the set up I have is proving very difficult to find a replacement for. I shall need spares for our up coming med trip so good to get this sorted now.

I imagine that the problem has arisen due to the 4 day bashing we've had down here. A 50 mph wind up the rear of the boat, constant tugging and very salty inside the connection, (not wet though).

All good fun :)

You could try Aquafax in Plymouth, Nigel. They are the Marinco distributor for UK as far as I can see.

Richard.

Thanks Richard, they were very helpful but were not able to get the part. At least they tried which is better than a couple of others I have spoken to, Marine Spares have also been very helpful and will let me know tomorrow if they can source. I suspect that a better option is to engineer the boat away from reliance on a part like this so I will look to have the receiving socket on the boat changed.

Appreciate the help.

That looks to me like the neutral has blown with the damage where the neutral feeder wire enters the outer insulation sleeve. I would suspect the wire has been moving within the fitting and has fatigued. As the individual strands fail the current has less and less remaining strands to pass through, so these then start to overheat, until the last few simply burn out.

I personally don't like the Marinco, and I am surprised they can sell these in the EU in yellow for 240 volts when yellow is the IEC established colour for 115 volts.

If I was ditching the Marinco fittings I'd probably look at standard Commando fittings instead.

Agreed, I will discuss with the EME next week....in the meantime Ancasta have found a replacement for me and couriered it down....I know that I keep going on about how good that are but it is on merit.

Thanks for all the input, one thing for sure is that I will be fitting a Velcro cable tie on the boat near the shore power door to eleviate perpetual stress on the socket. I'm pretty sure that's what lead to the failure from what's been said.

Thanks again to all.

you should also keep the lead as short as possible as you get volt drop per meter and keep a longer one in a locker for visiting outher marinas ,and it can act as back up,roy
you get
