Shooting waterskiers

Why is it that whilst anchored in a nice quiet spot enjoying my pastime (being anchored in a nice quiet spot with book, wine and wife) I get annoyed when someone else enjoying their pastime, in this case waterskiing, goes by again and again getting ever closer and creating more and more wake with their huge rib, all hollering like upper class lager louts....Am I being unreasonable in my thoughts or should I get a shotgun

Speaking as a waterskiier & yachtie, I keep wondering why so many world-girdling yachts have to keep anchoring all day in the middle of the only quiet, flat bit of water I have to ski on - surely they should be sailing, not anchoring....

And Hollering as an upper class lout, at least the skiiers' outboards must have been quiet if you could hear all that hollering!

Its a really good job that we don't carry guns in this country 'cos I do believe that I may have been that wound up by his actions that I would not have been able to resist taking potshots at them.

Am I being unreasonable in my thoughts or should I get a shotgun

I joined this thread late, and since there are 43 posts to read, well frankly, I can't be arsed. However, I couldn't resist sticking my ore in.

What it comes down to is this...

Unless you are intelligent enough to fully grasp the concept of empathy, then you're not going to understand why slowing down through the anchorage is decent, or why not throwing bottles at people houses is bad, or why walking along the street with music playing from your mobile phone just makes you look like you're not intelligent enough to understand the very simple idea of empathy.

If somebody is not capable of understanding when they might be spoiling somebody else's peace, then they are indeed a bit stupid (rarely obnoxious). Nevertheless, you, I presume, aren't, and so posses this ability. Lend some empathy to them; they can't help it, they don't know any better, and it's quite certain that they will never truly understand the world which they disturb.

When that wake hits you, turn your anger in to pity, because you may have 30 seconds on rolling around, but they have a whole lifetime of not knowing what the feck is going on.

That is predictably a very insular view Scillypete. On your lovely islands the visitors go away and leave you to enjoy. Over here on the mainland the '30 seonds rolling around" goes on all day every day. Empathy be blowed! There are just too many of the (word removed)s around to be able to shrug it off. And they keep coming back for more.

And when they get tired and do go away, the Jetski brigade take over. Eventually the pubs open and they push off. So does the bloke on the next boat - leaving his genny running all evening.

Caravanners come in for a whole lot of stick on these pages, but you know, you very very rarely get the kind of loiutish behaviour we are forced to accept as normal in our anchorages and marinas (like the drunks at 2.00am returning down the pontoon) on caravan sites. Try it, and an irate site warden/ owner will rapidly descend and kick you out. Seen it happen.

Old Harry - are you referriing to my original post or the very eloquent post by NathanLee?

I take your point about it being a regular problem in other areas but it does not make it any less annoying to experience it here.

Buzzfan - There was plenty of open flat water nearby where they could have enjoyed their sport without affecting anybody else, the fact is nobody would see them out there, so they stay as near to the shore and anchored boats as possible to guarantee their audience blissfully unaware of the ire they are creating.

They were lucky I had chosen not to bother to set a net that day . . . maybe next time they will not be so lucky.

The designers of the net device seem to have forgotten that jetskis don't have external props that can be fouled in that way. Back tot he drawing board.

The basic idea is a good one though. A floating line trailing behind would do the job but a piece of net would be even more effective. For jetskis one would need something that blocked their water inlet.
