Shocking piece of video...dare I say "col regs"?

Re: Shocking piece of video...dare I say \"col regs\"?

Not too sure about this site. When I viewed the video I got one of the Psuedo Windows pop-ups telling me I have registry problems and would I like to install WinSolver or some such junk.

Holy *&^&!!! Is this real? There must be a follow up story somewhere?

Re: Shocking piece of video...dare I say \"col regs\"?

There seem to be only 3 or 4 crew on deck the yacht so presumably no one noticed the ship ahead!!?

Never mind col regs, if you see something that much bigger than yourself straight ahead, you take early avoiding action. And they were motoring so no problems about having to tack.

Been there, (nearly) done that....

It was about 1995 and I took a friend who claimed to be experienced on a cross channel trip from the Hamble. We started out into a black Southampton water at around midnight. There was no wind at all and he was on the helm. Soon after NE Gurnard I went below to plot a position and came up just in time to be told "I'm just going around ahead of this anchored coaster"

Of course it wasn't anchored at all but moving at around six knots and we would have been run down by it if I hadn't spotted the small white bow wave and pushed the tiller over, helsman and all.

I've seen this video on another site where the definition was a little clearer. It looks as if the helmsman on that yacht momentarily has his attention taken by something astern and for whatever reason, the helm slams over to port. He seems to come back to attention and straightens up by automatic reaction before seeing the ship bearing down on him. By the time he assimulates the situation it is too late to react and he attempts a futile waving down gesture. Thump!

Scary?

I have just had the same thing. I cancelled it. Does anyone think it is genuine, Microsoft-based? Or is it invasive?

I suppose you're the sort of driver that igores the highway code and stops unexpectedly on roundabouts to let people out . "Never had an accident but seen plenty in my mirror." The Colregs are there to be applied after much consideration being given to their content. It helps nobody to modify them on a whim. Whatever the colreg faults at least they are universal unlike your own pecular code of practice.

I saw a near similar incident in the Solent - yacht sailing from East to West and large cargo ship coming down the Thorn Channel - giving 5 blast, on several occasions! Yacht carried on and past between ship and pilot boat. From the angle I was I thought the mast touched the anchor of the cargo ship. It was unbelievable to watch /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Re: Shocking piece of video...dare I say \"col regs\"?

Come on thats a bit harsh isn't it.....

In this situation, its a large vessel in what appears to be a smallish bit of water, so it would be reasonable to assume 'constrained by draught'..... and the small boat therefore has an obligation to stay out of the way..... for sure follow the colregs, but only where appropriate.... an early turn to port well clear of the vessel to outside of the main channel would have been an entirely appropriate action in my book, providing he didn't leave it too late to allow the big boat capatin to see what his action was.....

From what you can see, it would appear that his big mistake was to fail to keep a watch out...... and therefore any action he took was really far too late... FWIW, I use the Orwell most weekends, and stuff like that is a constant part of the river, and you get used to looking ahead and behind and staying just out of the channel, either side.....

Neither, it is a pop up advertisment and harmless. Just cancel it and forget it.
