Shoal at Entrance To Penton Hook Marina

Why is that? Do some treat it like a static caravan park?

We ventured our last weekend :) The depth in the area of the green markers was 12 foot with the odd short change to 10ft 6'' on my gauge. The markers have moved around during the 16 years that I have been at PH. About 9 years ago in my previous boat [approx 3' draft] I had a friend at the helm who while I was below doing the washing up navigated the marker on the wrong side and we went through without any problem. I would however not recommend this as I have seen a few sutck

MDL own and are responsible for the maintenance of the private artificial channel or cut. The EA are responsible for the channel from below the lock to MDL’s cut.

Both are subject to an agreement for each party to maintain their bit to a depth of 8 feet.

Most would accept that maintenance at those depths is no longer critical for safe navigation but the shoaling on the opposite side of the channel to the clubhouse does substantially reduce the width of the available channel in an area of considerable two way congestion, at least in summer months.

This is exacerbated by a fallen tree in the channel partly across the mouth of the Abbey River increasing both the difficulties in navigation and the flood risk.

Boatone is right in advising that sufficient depth is available if you stay well to the clubhouse side but I would advise caution if any sort of stream is running to avoid being swept onto moored boats outside either the clubhouse or visitor pontoon if staying too close.

MDL should remove the tree and the EA should dredge at least this small part of the channel.

I appreciate this only really effects the boaters going in and out of Penton Hook Marina, but as so many boats have run aground there surly its considered a hazard to navigation. Although boaters should know the correct way to pass a buoy, clearly with the number of incidents at this spot, especially day trippers coming into the Marina it still remains a considerable hazard.

Is this something the TMBA could push on our behalf, as its only a very small area that needs dredging, not the whole channel ?

Not really a matter for the TMBA unless boats are running aground when they keep to the marked channel. We did get involved when one of the buoys went AWOL to make sure it was put back after the floods.

Nothing the EA can do if people are silly enough to ignore the navigation marks. Also, I understand that there is quite a pronounced ledge, not just shelving.

Ok, one last question, does anyone know if there is a Penton Hook Marina Users Group ?
not that I am aware of.
Perhaps I should point out that TMBA is concerned with all issues affecting members using the non tidal - not just the EA. If a member were to raise a problem concerning, say, marinas or local auhority issues we would certainly consider whrther we should assist. I have fairly regular conversations that help things along ! Some may remember my success un getting trolleys removed from the moorings at Staines.

Used to be. Headed up by Ken and Jean Beacham. They did a really good job too in the years they were at the helm. Sadly Ken passed away and with no one to take up the cause it fell apart.
