Shipwright Recommendations near Galmpton, Brixham

Can't help with the joinery. I tried to find someone in the area and failed. But Pedros at Dartside would be good at GRP.

Well, I can recommend NOT using pedros yacht refinishing, based on my own experiences. I had some cracking to my deck around the forestay chainplate. they charged me £1800 to fix. a year later when the repair failed, it was aparent that for their 'repair', they had removed the fitting, put one layer of epoxy and cloth OVER the damaged area INCLUDING deck paint, and slapped the fitting back on. All neatly hidden under fresh deck paint.

I bought a good book on GRP repair, a respirator and and angle grinder and fixed it properly myself.

Had a simlar ordeal with my engine and a marine engineer in Bristol some years later.

As a result I do everything myself these days.

what? another one? not in a thousand years! but thanks anyway:)

why is it so hard to get honest good quality craftsmanship these days?

Nobody minds paying professional hourly rates for a professional job, but thats seldom what one gets in return!

Regrettably that's exactly where I am too; my experience is to expect to be disappointed and very rarely be pleased. Even more rarely be delighted.

A young Irish lad with a new business called zinc marine did me some stainless wire jackstays a year or two ago. he told me he'd go to the boat and price them up. he did just that. He then carried out the work when he said he would, for the price he said he would and did a damn good job of it too.

I was frankly, gobsmacked. In fact I made such a fuss of him telling him how refreshing this service was and sending him emails of my pleasure at his service I may well have scared him into thinking I was some kind of stalker or had taken a shine to him. He seemed relieved when he met my wife!

I was just so excited to learn that not EVERYONE in the trade is out to rip people off. Sadly though, the guy is in a minority.

I resent doing all the work on my lonesome as it eats into valuable sailing time and also means that time off work is often spent, well, working. But I have, like you , had my fingers burned too many times.

I need some interior joinery and GRP work quoting for on a vessel currently on land at Dartside Quay, Galmpton, Devon. Any recommendations?

TY!

sorry I've hijacked your thread and gone into autorant.

see if you can find a guy called paul goodwill marine services in the dartmouth area. He gave me a quote for my chainplate work. I cant vouch for the work itself because I made the mistake of using pedros, but he came and gave me a quote and produced a detailed report of damage and programme of repair for me. He intended to grind the lot out and rebuild it. He may not have been the cheapest but certainly gave the impression that he would have carried out a decent repair.

can I recommend this book to you:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fiberglass-...9146/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1321388192&sr=8-1

everyone with a boat should have it.

Even if you dont do the work yourself (though you'll be tempted after reading it) it will allow you to oversee the work that someone else does for you to make sure you are not ripped off, or worse put to sea in an unseaworthy craft. Besides which you'll learn a lot about how your boat is put together.

No worries! And thank you for the book recommendation.

Unfortunately I fear that most of what I need doing is carpentry related.

I've found contact details for "Curtis & Biss" who seem to work in the area. Anyone had any experience with them?

Try Ian Bowles, he works out of Baltic Wharf Boatyard, just upriver from you at Totnes.
Known of him for years, never heard anything negative, but have not used him myself, never had occasion too, other than when he pulled me off the mud in the upper reaches of the Dart on one particularly big spring tide... but i digress.
His forte is teak decks i believe, but he should be able to sort you out, if not too busy...
Just a thought...

Unusaual to hear rumour of bad workmanship coming from pedros? I and boating aquaintances of mine have been taking our various craft there for years and have nothing but praise about anything they have ever done !
quite possibly you were unfortunate or there is a deeper lying fault with your boat ?.
Im sure that using a well established business like pedros you can at least get them back if there is a problem, may i ask if you did call them back once you realised there was a problem with the repair you had done and if so what was there response, they really are a nice bunch and really helpful.
They also have a really good carpenter/shipwright guy who has undertaken various bits of carpentry for us .
Afriend took his nicholson 38 to baltic a few years ago and was nothing but displeased with what they did and there hard sell practices.
good luck

A local chap who has done a great job for a friend i simon sharp he works in dartmouth.

Pedros employee!!

hmm. sounds suspiciously like a pedros employee has found this post!

i have had my boat repaired by this company before, i must say the work is good, the workshop manager, andrew, was very good to deal with, however pedros are not shy of pulling a fast one [removed by admin], try plymouth.
