Your topic is entitled "shipwrecks". You then ask how many people have perished.
No doubt you will say I am being pedantic, but ships can be wrecked without loss of life.
I am sure many boats have been swept onto weirs or suffered other plights as a result of being caught out in severe river conditions, or navigated badly by people inexperienced in the ways of the river.
The Red and Yellow boards sytem is a warning routine and also has specific implications for users of hired cruisers. The boards do not, per se, forbid navigation, indeed the lock-keepers will lock you through and, and even give you a small present of a warning card to commemorate your visit
This was doing approx 40 knots at the back of Desborough Island. It caused even more chaos when they tried to drag it off as a couple of sailing boats got ensnared in the towline and the clubs commodore went for a swim! A good deal more happened but can't remember it all.
to summarise, when red boards show, make sure you are not stupid, foreign or on a single engined poorley maintained craft......... Otherwise enjoy youself......
