Hi it's me again! What are people's thoughts on boat registration, I take delivery of my new boat on 21st Feb and i am wondering if i should register as part 1 or small ships. What is the difference between them? What are the advantages/disadvantages of both and how do i go about performing the task. Should i bother at all or is this just another tax club i will regret joining.

If memory serves correctly, one is quite cheap and the other bl**dy expensive for a start. Need one or the other though if you plan to go outside UK. Paul

If your going to France need SSR cost ten quid. Other than that, it's not worth the paper it's writen on. I have a spare one with a new unused number you can have for a fiver. Says something like. White Boat 35ft!!!

Just completing the Part 1 process. It has taken 6 months!

SSR needs one form, a small fee and call your boat what you like.

Part 1 needs lots of forms and several fees:
- Phone to check that the name you chose is unique
- Application form and fee
- Certificate of Eligibility
- Builders Certificate
- Bill of Sale
- Survey (another fee) to calculate how much grain it could carry ("Tonnage"), which is completely different from condition survey
- Ship's name and port of registry permanently marked on the stern
- Name, port of registry, tonnage and official number permanently marked on a plaque on the main beam (what?)

THEN you get your certificate of registry.

About the same time for me (for part 1) on a brand new boat. I started last July and with a bit of luck then the MCGA "Inspector of Marks" will (yes) inspect my mark tomorrow - so the theory is I'm on the final bits!!!

If a UK only boat stick it on SSR. If going to charter or taking it abroad then it's part 1.

RYA (so I found out later) can assist with the part 1 registration process for about £130.

RE part 1: You must be prepared for the MCGA to keep your original ships papers until such time as the boat is finally registered; however I found them very helpful (especially when I got their direct e-mail contacts!)and when I requested certified copies for other purposes they supplied almost immmediately.

It may not apply to your case but for general info some marine mortgages demand Part 1 as the loan is recorded whereas SSR doesn't show liens
