Ships leaving the Solent

Leaving through Hurst a few mins ago.

Almost certainly going to play with the gentlemen from Poole.

I sailed in the Solent a lot from mid eighties to mid nineties. Lots of commercial vessels and warships used to use the channel. Then they all of a sudden stopped. I always wondered if it was a decision on HS grounds but never established the real reason. Would be nice to know!

Back in the 80s my neighbour here in the Dales was a serving submarine officer, and I remember him inferring that the Hurst end was silting up. Him being the boats navigation officer, who was I to question him about anything !

I also remember a tanker (small one not huge crude oil carrier) going aground outside Lymington some time in the early noughties.

That led to the installation of a new red can, either Solent or Lymington Bank.
