Ship\'s compass, binnacle ?

Tried a search, but couldn't find anything on this.

When we bought our boat it had just come back from the Med. We've no idea how long it spent there, but probably long enough to cloud the glass of the compass. The previous owner replaced the compass with an Italian one that, I think, was intended for a power boat, and is quite small. He was possibly trying to save money. Fairly soon we will need to change it for a yottie compass about 150 mm (6 in ) diameter.

What is the forum's considered opinion as to the best compass to get? Ritchie, Suunto, Plastimo (?), etc. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

None of the above.

Sestrel, by a country mile.

Now made by SIRS Navigation in Kent.

The Major is an excellent sailing yacht compass; if you have serious deviation problems or an awkward shaped cockpit then the Moore does perfectly.

Yes, they cost more, and yes they are absolutely worth it.

I have no interest in the business, but I've been messing about in boats for nearly forty years; most other makes have gone wrong on me; these never have.
