Ship\'s Bell dangly bit.

The first prize that I won in a sailing race was a ships bell. After 38 years the dangly bit has rotted and been lost and I want to make a new one.I've searched for on-line instructions to no avail.
Any suggestion as to where to look?(insufficient funds to buy Ashley's tome).

Try a nice letter to the Royal Navy Seamanship School!

The seaman specialist are always doing these things!

A nice donation should do the the trick.

I remember a LS(S) Sanky, as post HMS Achilles, always with his Scrinsons out, a real craftsman.

Re: Ship\'s Bell dangly bit.

"Dangly bit" - in Turkey this autumn, son #2 couldn't get his head round that it's very bad luck on a boat to use the French "corde" for anything other than the dangly bit, or the hangmans's noose (and we didn't even have Saddam on board!) Same went for other crew members whistling, altho' this is apparently a Brit thing, not known to Belgians.

Whatever, after a few days of all this bad luck being called upon us, I threatened to remove a few "dangly bits" to feed the fish. Another solution might be to dry them in the sun and plait them into dangly bits for bells

I'm an idiot, I looked at grog and missed that. thanks.
Monkeys Fist,sennet,wall knot,job done.
Why do I have this feeling that I'll be following talbot's link and buying one!

The Marlinspike Sailor by Hervey Garrett Smith published by David & Charles has a whole chapter on the very subject

Seachest Bookshop in Plymouth has a good secondhand books section. see www.Seachest.co.uk

Re: Ship\'s Bell dangly bit.

Tied my first monkey's fist last year. Very satisfying and not at all difficult and I felt like a real sailor every time I heaved the bucket over the side - until the handle came off.

Go on - give it a try.

Re: Ship\'s Bell dangly bit.

Nautical trivia time: the bell rope is the only rope on a vessel actually called a rope. You never know when that might come in useful.....

Curiosity ... where did you have the "monkeys fist" .... as normal would be either an eye-splice or a crown and back[-splice to the handle. A MF possibly at tail end of lanyard ?

MF with suitable object inside is the basic ball end of a heaving line ... or a fancy end to a rope tail.

Not being smart ... just curious as a person who does ropework ......

Best way to get a heaving line to go a decent distance. Unfortunately, you can really hurt someone if it hits them . Most dockyard workers will cut off thee monkeys fist and throw it away if they think it has been supplemented with a bit of lead!

Stevedores / Dockies ...

True ... in fact there is a general recc'd out to ships to not use the MF even without a stone etc. in it. The recc'd way is to use a small canvas sand-bag sewn up and fixed to line end.

Having worked on Lightering ships ... and had .303 rifle gear with brass bolts, rockeline gear ... etc. still the best was the MF with a stone in it ! Forget the two hand coils method .... as taught in all good sea-schools. What you need is a clear space about 4 - 6m diameter .... you then start a circular swing of rope above the head ... letting out bit by bit till you have at least 2m line "whomping" round like a helicopter rotor .... at suitable point let her fly ... the distance achieved is amazing .....

Oh nearly forgot .... it used to common practice to dip the MF with weight in it into Red Lead paint ... to seal it up and give it a bit more substance !! Now that was a weapon !

Re: Ship\'s Bell dangly bit.

"Monkeys Fist, sennet, wall knot, job done" - probably not the way to go -

you will find it better to start from the top :

plait first( two yarns, four ends, start in the middle), wall knot, sennet, monkeys fist last.....

I shot one of those into a funnel once - punched a hole through the plate!

These days instead of the solid metal rod, they have a plastic dildo, and wont work against the wind!

You can imagine two ships moving about approaching each other ... some twit on the smaller lighterer with a .303 and brass bolt ready to fire .... We had to give 'em up as it was too dangerous ... the rocket line was too daft and expensive !.

So back to good 'ol heaving line ...

One ship I know even tried a catapult - but that was a dead loss ...
