Hi, I have a Nordhavn 43 and am hoping to bring it to UK for May/June and maybe go back to France for July & August. I was going to do the trip myself or get a delivery skipper to do it, but a few have declined me because of covid technicalities (test within 72h etc)... i am now looking at bringing the boat back by ship.. Unfortunately it is too high to go by road.

Now, VAT is something else that must be considered when bringing a boat from the EU to the UK.... I bought the boat in the UK in April 2020.... It went to France in July and remained there on the 31.12.2020. Tax resident in EU country. If i bring it back to the UK, will I be asked to pay VAT on the boat or can I just be a visiting boat? Can I say I am a visiting boat for a few months and say I am off again in 2 months back to the EU where I am based?

You won’t be importing the vessel to UK so UK VAT won’t be due.

On a positive note for your trip, Jersey and Guernsey are ‘open’ from 27th April. Traffic light system depending where you arrive from for Jersey. A green area and you only require either a test before you come or a test on arrival and isolate until you get those results (circa 12 hours).

Thank you.. good news about Jersey & Guernsey as they are both nice spots and definitely a spot we would stop on the return trip back to france

Thats not quite true. Actually because the boat was in the EU on 31 Dec 2020 it is considered EU VAT paid. The vessel will be imported into the UK and theoretically should be liable for VAT but should be subject to Returned Goods Relief (until 1 Jan 2022) as VAT was previously paid in the UK but its worth checking with HMRC that you qualify for that. Similarly, when the boat returns to the EU, it should be subject to Returned Goods Relief but do you have documented proof that it was in the EU on 31 Dec 2020?

Yes I have a letter from the marina on that... not Uk resident so I don’t qualify for the RGR so it will be coming as a temporary import
