I understand, but would like some confirmation, that shipping to Gibraltar, purchases made in the USA means no VAT or import taxes are paid as we do here in the UK.

Has anyone done this or who knows for certain that this is the case.

Many thanks

Mike

Gibraltar is outside the EU VAT area, but of course you would have to keep the item entirely outside the EU to avoid VAT and duty.

Why don't you check with the Gib customs?

What are you planning to ship, angelsson?
In my experience small items sent by US Post seem not to attract the attention of Mr Excise; in the case of items sent by the likes of DHL, you'll be asked to pay VAT/duty when signing for the package.

It's a very good idea to pre-pay the import duty; otherwise customs will keep your stuff for weeks......and charge you for storage as well.

Gib is not a tax free zone as far as I know, some items attract duty.

Its all about 'vessel in transit' for Gib.

Anything imported is subject to an import duty of between 6 and 12 percent depending on what it is.

If you can prove 'in transit' then no import duty is payable. The goods will have to come straight to the boat from customs carried by yourself or an agent. Its easier using an agent!

Ships papers and Masters passport required.

The boat must be in Gib, not over the border and you have about 2 weeks to depart.

Eastgate are good agents as are Redwood. Try them rather than asking Customs.

Hope this helps.

I am planning on a cross Atlantic trip, (long term plan for next year) and i wish to install a HF/SSB radio for communications weather etc.
They are much cheaper in the USA, and if I can legally avoid VAT and customs duty (only to be wasted on foolish government 'initiatives' and wasted aid) then I will do so, the budget is tight.
I am based in Sardinia so it is on my way to the Canaries to stop over and collect it to be fitted on arrival in the Canaries or even in Gib. time allowing.

I recently purchased Sunbrella and accessories from the US to make new covers, but had to pay the duty and VAT, was marginally worth it as the support from the US company was amazing.

Many thanks for your very helpful reply sounds like it is what I want.
Please see my previous post which explains my motives for this thread, would they be considered 'in transit' as the law requires, which I certainly will be of course to the Canaries and onwards to the Caribbean.

Regards

Mike
