shipping stuff abroad

Hello all... I would like to send a box ..approx 20 kg full of tools, bits& bobs etc to Malta.We will be flying over there from the UK in a few weeks time and reckon we will be over the weight limit for the plane.. hence sending stuff ahead. What is the most economic way to do this? The main courier companies seem to need an account opened with them .Is there a way to send things without going through lots of hassle? Thanks

I would have thought if it's just 20kg, then you can check it in as hold luggage. Even if you have to pay a surcharge it will still be simpler than sending it seperately.

I recently sent a package from UK to myself/boat at a marina in Sardinia. It weighed 24Kgs and was delivered six days after being collected from my house. I was able to follow the various stages of it's progress on the internet. Cost £29.95. It was handled by DHL through the agency of Parcel2Go under an arrangement they have with E-Bay. You pay for it directly and get full shipping instructions.
I had heard some negative comments about Parcel2Go but in my case it worked without a hitch, the only difficulty being that somebody had to be at home on the day designated for collection.

As I tried to explain David we are already over the weight limit for the plane with the stuff we already have..sorry if I did not make that clear.They will charge approx 5 uk pounds per kilo over that.

You could try Parcelforce - you can check prices on their web site.

Or alternatively Interparcel arrange collections using either UPS or DHL and I don't believe they require you to have an account. You can get a quote and book on line.

Both Parcelforce and Interparcel (or more accurately the couriers) collect from your premises.

Customs and paperwork are no problem. Malta is now in the EU and either of these couriers will bring (or email) the necessary forms for you to complete.

I've more often than not been outrageously overweight on every flight in the last two years to Greece and back having only paid out (at £2/kg)once and then due to an aggressive EasyJet clerk who was having a bad day.

It sems to depend on how full the plane is and how big it is. Airbuses seem best. I brought two cabin doors and a bike back on one of those in November last which put me at nearly 40kgs and no charge was made after I was cringingly apologetic. I brought a 17X12 three blade propellor back last week from Corfu which they found amusing but made no charge for.

Shipping as such is expensive and technically requires shipping agents at both ends. Thgis is not appropriate to a one off package. You need a Parcel Service. Try DHL, Wells Fargo or even ParcelForce. You don't need an existing account if you take it to one of their depots. I sent a parcel of about that weight to Athens at Christmas 2003 and it got there safely in three days for around £23 as I remember.

we would be flying easyjet to stanstead then Air Malta to Luqa,we are already up to our limit re weight but I want to send over a load of tools etc.As it would be a one off(hopefully) it would seem sensible to get them sent over. Thanks for all the replies ..We also need to buy a liferaft,l/jackets and a load of other bits& pieces .. Reckon it would be better to buy them from a supplier here(UK) and get them to ship to Malta..Any comments?
