Shipping crates

Anyone know the standard dimensions of a shipping crate?

Do you mean " a shipping container" rather than crate as crate can be any size?

If its a container you need then there is 20 foot, and 40 foot size but the door dims vary on each provider. Have a look on the Mersk or any shipping company web site and you will get door opening sizes. We use average dims unless it gets to a big bit of kit where the door opening size is so close we need to check.

Just though there are also "ISO" container sizes for aircraft, perhaps thats what you are after?

More detail might help

Sorry yes,

I mean a shipping container - i.e. the big metal jobbies that go on ships and trucks etc.

Looking at shipping something back for the states, and just trying to work out the best way. Main item will fit in a container length wise but not sure about the width as it is 11.5m x 3.9m.

Standard 20ft external 20ft loa 8ft 2.5 in wide 8 ft 6 in high.

40ft same as above except 40ft long.

No containers are 3.9m wide, if its a boat it could go on a 40ft flatrack as over with out of gauge ? or on a Mafi trailer

You can either send on a number of flat racks of go for the RORO option ex US east coast.

there are plenty of RORO services and would need it to be loaded to mafi at the port.

Any half decent shipipng company could assist with this. the usual ones will be Peters & May and PSP. both have had plenty of exposure on here, (mostly good)

they should be able to give you an idea on price...

edit, sorry, are you wanting mast up??? if so deck cargo is the way.. Mast down i would expect to be much cheaper.... pm me if you want any more suggestions...

Open top containers are available on many routes and most ships have stowage racks where over width cargo goes. Boats likeTrader and others come to the UK like this and often stowed on the bow racks. Speak to one of the shippers.

Ok, cheers all.

Just to clear things up, it wouldnt be mast up. Boat can be derigged.

No draft issues as it has a retractable dagger board rather than a keel which leaves a smooth bottom

Am I right in thinking a RoRo would need a cradle or trolly? Boat has an interesting hull profile so not sure a 'standard' one would work. Would racks be better?

Boat is on the west coast USA - overland truck to the east coast or ship direct?

And Derek - yes, a bit of a wuss. Its only just over 10m in reality. Bit small for a transat - especially with my history

You do need a bit of specialist advice, as getting it from west coast to est will involve rail links etc. The yanks unlike us dont like too much big stuff going by road. Overhangs on width of container means you pay for the space where they cant put another container, if you get my drift. Again needs specialist knowledge and negotiation.

Why are you against Peters and May? Im told they do a great job?

OH and by the way, do you know what your getting into, with all that string and white sheets
