Tried searching the forum, but could not find much on the subject.

Unable to find a certain commercial boat at the right price, am considering buying one in Oz and having it shipped back to the UK.

Has anyone shipped a boat back to the UK from Oz? Costs involved ? (I know depends on size)
are there other import duties or issues?? - I'm vat registered so that is reclaimable.

Thanks
rob

You need to check first that the boat will comply with EU standards, particularly the engine(s).

If it is small enough to fit in a 40' container, that will be around £2500 (based on the last quote I had for a container from NZ). If it is deck cargo then significantly more, plus constructing a cradle to take it. I have seen quotes of £15k+ for yachts.

Suggest you contact specialist such as Peters and May.

Good point about the engines - thanks - defo deck cargo, and I was thinking it might be around the £15-£20k mark

May not be much help, but I shipped a sport / fisher in from the US. Most boats are too wide for containerisation. Mine came as deck cargo on a road trailer.

That was very simple and straight forward. The main advice that I would offer is to get a really good shipping agent who has previous experience of importing boats or vehicles, they will be familiar with all of the paperwork and have a working relationship with Customs.

Good luck with it - It worked out well for me and I would happily do it again.

I shipped a 47 footer from UK to Hong Kong and the bill is around 45,000 Pounds all inclusive. Should be quite a bit more for Australia I think.

An owner I helped down to Gib a few years ago, bought a Catalina 42 off the web from Oz.
Got it shipped over & it was at Hamble Point Marina, "in bond", so no tax etc, whilst work was being done also tax free. Then sailed it to Gib, where he could keep it for 6 months, intending to sail it out of the EU to Morocco, then bring it back in for another 6 months. Not sure if those rules still valid.

Last bit is odd as both Gib and Morocco are outside the EU for VAT purposes. If he wants to use it in the EU he either applies for temporary importation if eligible or pays the VAT.

I just got him there, the regs were his concern.

Appreciate that, but your last sentence was not based on any known facts and might mislead others reading this thread! A non VAT paid boat is free to move in and out of Gib or Morocco - just cannot enter the EU without paying VAT or getting TI - and that is only available to non EU residents.
