I had one repaired on my last boat by Jim at Port solent last year, all good, no complaints.
But, I am just about to replace the 8400 on Houston for a Standard Horizon DSC unit. So you could get one from me next week too. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
PM for details if any use, but still worth repairing your 8300 too.
Checked out Ebay, they all seem to be RS 8400, is this the same as the RS 8300, with the newer model number
Also the onces on Ebay relate to US spec, will this work in the UK ,
Not to familar with Simrad, so any info appreciated.
The 8300 is single station only and the channels are international only where as the 8400 has both U.S. and Int. channels and can also be twin station (not obvious by looking even if 2nd jack socket is present) for Flybridge application with internal intercom. The 8400 is therefore a direct plug in replacment.
nah that ain't right Roger - I got the 8300 myself, twin sockets on the main box, operates twin handsets just fine. and yep, has international or US channel selection.
within the 8300's & therefore most likely a possible issue with swapping in an 8400 .... there were two different types of handset plugs; so that should be checked out first - sure, it can be fixed by either a new handset cable, or a new socket /cable at the point it plugs in; but it might not be a drop-in replacement.
I managed to fix our 8400 on the last boat by changing (as Andy says) both the curly cable and the socket on the boat.
The fault was intermittent opperation on the flybridge station when you waggled the connector.
I contacted Simrad who arranged for me to buy a new lead through someone in Fareham (I think) - anyway, the new parts arrived the next day in a jiffy bag and that fixed the problem.
mine has intercom - everything but that sos feature. The manual reckons there were at least three different 8300's - a basic, an sos and an 'SD' . Manuals still here
no probs Roger, I actually bought mine from the same Port Solent guys - two 8300 modules & two handsets; after the Dutch guy who previously owned insisted on removing the existing one ( tho' leaving the wiring & cradles ) because it had his ID programmed in - ATIS I think.
