I have a Shipmate RS5700 GPS which has been working well for many years, but which has recently lost it's memory. Every time I start up it has no almanac and has lost all waypoints - otherwise it still works well. Is this something as simple as an internal battery which powers the memory and is now dead?

Definitely an internal battery (normally last about 5 years) Whether it is simple is a matter for your manufacturer. My Navman 5500 needs a new internal battery. I identified it as a one supplied by Maplin, but then discovered that the manufacturer had welded locating lugs onto the battery so it has to go back to them for replacement.

Hi,

The Shipmate RS5700 GPS simply requires a replacement memory battery and needs to be tested. If you would like this done, please return the item to the address below:

I had one of these (may be still have it somewhere) - you can dismantle it and replace battery yourself if your have a soldering iron. I had to do this, if I remember rightly it is just a penny type battery.

Jeff.
