Ship runs down bouy

What chance do small boats have, when a 56,000 bulk carrier, at 05.45 on a wide quite river, on its way to collect a pilot, runs down a lit navigation mark and then fouls its propeller on the marks chain.

It happened Thursday morning 31 July. A long way away form the Solent, in the longest river in the British Isles. The Shannon in Ireland.

Donnaha buoy is not out of station. Divers going to inspect ship today.

A few years ago a ship that shall remain nameless (or my boss will be unhappy) ran down not one but two navigation buoys in Plymouth harbour. All three bridge officers had masters certificates, as did the two pilots who were on board. The answer for the likes of us is to keep well out of the way at all times!
