I had in the back of my head an idea that I needed a licence for something else as well, something I heard them say last year in my VHF course.... maybe the radio hardware itself needing a licence?
Each of the ships' radio's needs to be included on the licence; handheld as well as fixed? How about MMSI number, needs to be programmed into a DSC set?
I'm impressed that you found the website easy to use. Can't say that I shared the same experience for either ship or amateur.
do you have the gmdss "dsc" endorsment on your src, you may need this if using dsc equipment, all src licences are now issued with it but if you have had your src for some time it may not be included.
Captain Bob, You might be referring to the fact that your radio needs to be in compliance with the standards laid down by the MCA. Not a problem for anyone but the manufacturers. Pages 4 - 6 of the RYA Handbook VHF radio ( inc GMDSS) G22 gives the full Licencing requirement. You would seem to be covered.

Operators license for you, ships radio for the "ship" including fixed and portables and EPIRBs. Thats it
Agree about the website its a gem.
Anyone tried adding a DSC radio to an existing license. You have to have blind faith until screen 9 of 9 before it gives even a hint that it is going to generate a MMSI number. Office of Communications - they're having a laugh arent they?
