just looking into stopping at new places on our holiday trip, and wondered what the latest opinion was on Shillingford as I seem to remember that last year they were charging £20 for a mooring.
Does that price include use of all the facilities (swimming pool) and come with electric hook up?
is there much to see in Shillingford, not that we are looking for a lively place but do they have a pub and local shop?
Did I also hear that there is a free EA mooring near the hotel?

You can moor upstream on the bends for nothing or just past the Hotel lawn under the trees. Electric is included which can be usefull, I believe Brayman negotiated a refund of the mooring fee if so much was spent in the restaurant.

Not much in Shillingford no shop, but you can walk into Warborough where there is a shop and nice pub.

Its a good spot to stop but the mooring fee has rather killed the appeal.

might just stick to Dorchester then. We moored up here last year (unplanned), and took a walk into the village and was really impressed by it. From memory I think there was 3 pubs plus a shop and all lots of thatched roofs - looking forward to going back this year and exploring it (well the other 2 pubs) in more detail.

Benson moorings

We've moored at Benson lock a few times; I don't know what the current rate is but it'll be less than the hotel. Just a short walk over the weir up to the riverside cafe. No electric hook up, of course. Lovely spot though.

We often launch at Benson and also use it as a stopover. Clean toilets and showers, laundry, pump out and diesel. Not sure about shorepower though . McDonalds is only a 5 min walk away if that's what takes your fancy.

Speak to Adrian http://www.bensonwaterfront.co.uk/contact1.html as now we're in season, most of the LeBoat's boats on the frontage are out and he often has one or two bertholder's berths available for the odd night if the frontage is full.

We have only stayed at Shillingford once. Nice moorings but the road over the bridge is quite noisy which is probably why we have not been back. Much prefer Dorchester which is a lovely spot, moored by the entrance to the Thame or there are a couple of spaces on the lock island for a small fee.

The walk into Dorchester is a delight and there are pubs and a very nice tea shop to visit. At the weekends the Abbey tea rooms is open, run by the local WI.

I had never thought about trying for a visitors mooring at Benson, but if you want facilities that is worth a go. I am not sure about the riverside cafe. The only time we visited a couple of years ago it seemed expensive and a bit disorganised. Again you will be quite close to a busy road.

Wallingford now has moorings on both sides of the river just upstream of the bridge, with the local authority having installed some new pontoons a year or so ago. Popular at the weekends though.

Enjoy your trip wherever you decide to go. It gets my vote for the most beautiful part of the river.

Shillingford was empty when we went upstream last week on Friday and empty again on Sunday.
The £20 fee is having an effect...

Benson lock has a 'leccy point designed for boat recharge, so the fixed fee appears a bit high Mebe room for two boats. Give EA a ring.

The waterfront café is very active and the village is pleasant.

We used to stay there as £10 for a mooring with electric was OK, even though the food in the hotel was awful.

As others have said, very pleasant walk over the bridge to Warborough or alternatively take a five min Cab or Bus ride into Wallingford in an evening.

Personally like newbie, would stop at Dorchester in preference.

The food last year was much improved, not that that was difficult, but this is a new year and it would be good if someone could check it out and report back! Also that the 20% discount is still available on bar and restaurant food.
