The boats not the islands..........just thinking out loud so bear with me,would i be better off with a smallcuddy shetland or a similar sized rib,i live 4 mile from a sea slip but yet do my real boating inland 2hrs away,so thinking about something trailerable, with say decent 50hp outboard that i can keep at home launch and use easily at the coast.any thoughts?

The cuddy'd boat would offer greater versatility wouldn't it, and those old Shetlands enjoy good seakeeping usually...

IMHO!

First ever boat was a Shetland 535 with a Johnson 60. Went like stink. Good fun little boat. You shouldn't go too far wrong with one.

as a current shetland owner i cannot recomend them
enough, easy launch and recovery, easy to maintain,
can cope with anything the weather throws at you inland,
and after getting cought out in a wind against tide force 5,
coastal hops are not a problem. ours was ment as a starter
boat, the idea was to run it a couple of seasons them go
bigger, well after 6 years ,hundreds of miles trailed, and
many different waters explored we see no reason to change just yet.

I suppose it all depends on what you do with the boat. A wee Shetland and a RIB are two different animals offering two completely different options.

A few years back I had a Shetland Family 4 with a Yamaha 55 donkey that I found to be stable, reliable and a safe family boat. It had reasonable undrcover seating for 4 around a table, a sink, cooker and a place for the porta bog. Yes, it was rather cosy and the crew had to be "good Friends!!). The only downside was that it was SLOOOOOOOW, it did plod along nicely though.

I was surprised with this boat, considering it was a replacement for a 21ft bow rider with a V8 inboard, that had to go after Mr. Stork left us a present!!

IMHO you could do a lot worse than a Shetland.......
