Hi All,

Having a small issue with a sherwood raw water pump fitted to a CAT 3126 diesel engine.

Upon arriving here in France for our extended holiday i did my post arrival checks in the engine bay as usual and everything seemed OK other than the raw water pump on the port engine seems to have emitted a brown sludge (is all I can describe it as).

It seems to have come from two holes in between the impeller housing at the front and the gear housing at the rear. I can work out what it could be other than some old grease which for some reason has been spat out of these holes? Unfortunately, I mopped it all up before I thought about taking any pictures.....

Has anyone experienced this before or have any idea what could be causing it? Hopefully nothing too serious?

Thanks,
Andrew

Keep an eye on it , sounds like the seal on the raw water side is starting to leak . The holes are there to drain out any leakage . Don't panic there should also be another seal to keep the oil inside the timing case . Sorry don't know if sherwood pumps have service kits available .

They are a poor design. Bearing at the opposite end of the shaft from the impeller, so huge loads and moment about the bearing, so seals will give out. These can be serviced.

OK, thanks both for the info.

We are heading from Lezardrieux where we are now to Roscoff tomorrow so will see of there are any engineers there who could service the pump for me.

If parts or expertise are an issue is this something which I could live with for a while or does this need to be resolved ASAP?

I don't want to interrupt our holiday waiting for spares but neither do I want to cause further unnecessary damage to the pump or engine.

Thanks,
Andrew

Quick update. Good news, we managed to find an engineer who removed the pump and took it away for inspection. Bad news, it's knackered, bearings, both seals etc.

Have ordered a service exchange pump from Finnings as this was not much more expensive than a full service kit from ASAP and no labour.

Fair play to Finnings, they will hold the return open until we return to the UK in September to save me the postage and they have dispatched the pump to be here for Friday. I've had my challenges with them in the past but they have been very helpful this time.

As said above though, junk engineering!

Good support from Finnings.
