Hello,
I now have what appears to be the updated shaft and bearing assemblies for the pumps as mentioned in my previous posts, together with the appropriate updated seals. Hoping that Sherwood have got the mod right this time!
The mystery is, the "drive" end of the shaft is plain and parallel. I cannot see how the pulley will be secure on it, and prefer not to start dismantling the pump until I am ready to do the job in a day.
Any explanations, please?

I think you will find that your existing pump has a pressed on drive flange with a pulley that bolts to it, the last q s b I dismantled had this set up, looks like you will be more than a day as you will have to strip your old pump, rebuild it with the new kit, press off the old flange and warm it up , then press on to the newly rebuilt pump .

In my view what a Heath Robinson way to sell a rebuild kit to a d I y customer, I'd just stick a complete pump on it , if the body is worn on the wear faces then the pump won't reach its pumping capacity.

One for latestarter here to get the true facts on rebuild, I've done quite a bit on these qsb lumps, there a nice unit let down by silly things like this that could wreck an engine should your eyes stray from the temp gauges.

Hello !
I have changed both my pumps to the completely new design from Seaboard Marine talk to Tony!

There is a lot of problem with this old pump! I highly recommend to upgrade - se info below.

Here you have more information about the new design from Seaboard Marine http://www.sbmar.com/smx-seawater-pumps.php

Look also for "Tonys Tips" on www.sbmar.com for more useful information.

I made my upgrade in April (5,9-425hp 2006) without any problems, they was delivered 1 week after my order.

Yes I agree from engineering perspective it does seem all a bit 'whacko' however it is simple press fit and a ten tonne press does the job.

Sherwood seals weep, seems a fact of life however thats all they do, never seen catostropic failure of belt driven Sherwood on QSB, unlike direct driven 17XX pumps of the gearcase aux drive aperture on Cat 31 and Cummins B engines which on rare occasions have been known to suffer bearing siezeure taking out the front geartrain. Sherwood seem to be preferred supplier to Cat, Cummins and Deere, have no clue why??

I have to admit to being 'close' to Seaboard Marine and therefore I am biased, but their Seamax replacement pump is the only fit and forget replacement. Seamax pumps are around the same price as purchasing replacement Sherwood from ASAP it does have premium features such as 'Aquamet' shaft, as well as John Crane seals and SKF bearings.

I did consider being Eurpean Seamax distributor along with another member of this forum, QSB volumes Worldwide are slightly greater than Volvo D6 and Yanmar LYA3 combined, however in Europe QSB volumes are much smaller. As the Seamax pump is true fit and forget, comes with replacement impeller there is little ongoing business. Cummins and in particular the QSB is more popular popular in Norway and Seaboard has distributor there.

Seaboard Marine have no issue with shipping Worldwide so best deal with them.

Good luck

Thanks to everybody, especially Latestarter1. The redundant stock ones look great, but I have already purchased all the necessary parts for mine - at getting on for the same price!!
