Hello,
One of the Sherwood sea water pumps (300 hours) on my Azimut 43 is spotting the surrounding area with sort of rusty greasy marks, maybe enough to cover a thumbnail. Some of you did warn me about these pumps! But I don't fancy buying complete new ones. It seems to be coming from around the centre of the pump, where there seem to be drain holes. Luckily the pump is reasonably accessible.

My questions are -

1) Anybody know how urgent it might be to repair, or if we might get away with another 5 or 10 hours of slow running?

2) I will order parts from A.S.A.P. as soon as possible. Sounds as if it needs a set of seals and possibly bearings. I already have a spare impellor.

3) Are any special tools needed?

4) Can it be repaired in situ, perhaps by pulling it all out through the impellor end?

I hope you are all having a great season's boating.

John.

You can buy these pumps complete from the states for less than you can buy an impeller from the uk, latestarter off this forum may even have these pumps in stock here in the uk.

QSB...Great engine hampered by a poor raw water pump.

The Sherwood P2701 pump has been upgraded at least three times since 2005 in order to cure seal leakage, issue is that revised seals are NOT backwards compatible.

Would be good to know vintage of engines to see what pump revision you have and whether you have adjustable idler or stretchy belt drive.

I have been considering bringing in the FAR superior SeaMax QSB pump along with another forumite as this is really the way to go for a fit and forget Sherwood replacement.

If you want putting in touch with the U.S. just PM me.

Good luck

New P2708X Pump

The new P2708X pump replaces the P2701, P2702, P2703, P2704, P2805, P2706, P2708, P2709, and P2710 pumps. The pump is equipped with a pressed on silicon carbide seal seat and a new shaft and bearing assembly is used with this change. Older pumps can be upgraded to this new design by utilizing the 25100-SHW shaft bearing assembly and the 25115-SHW seal kit. This seal kit includes a seal pusher that sets the proper height of the seal seat on the shaft.

For further information about this option and how to identify whether or not you have the seal upgrade, please follow the P2708X pump link and download the technical guide.

Warning: The new water seal kit 25115-SHW is designed to be used with newer pump designs P2708-01, P2708X, P2709-01, and P2710-01) or upgraded older pump designs using the new 25100-SHW shaft/bearing assembly that facilitates the new metal sleeve water seal. The 25115-SHW metal sleeve water seal cannot be used with the previous shaft and bearing assemblies. Doing so will cause damage to the shaft and the seal.

Identifying the proper shaft for use with the 25115-SHW mechanical seal kit: 25100-SHW shaft/bearing assemblies do NOT have a retaining ring groove on the shaft in the area between the impeller and the first bearing (the bearing on the impeller end of the pump). These shaft and bearing assemblies can be used with the 25115-SHW. If a retaining ring exists between the impeller and the first bearing, do not use the 25115-SHW mechanical seal kit..'

Thanks for your replies. It seems the best option is to buy the latest bearing and shaft assembly and the latest seals. It was very difficult to find anybody in the UK or USA who had them in stock, but DEPCO in the USA on 800-446-1656 had everything and were very helpful. The parts are on their way.
