My boat is a deep fin which winbters in cardiff and summers on the south coast. Hence a yearly trip round lands end which is often a PITA. Problem is simple. I dont want to bash to windward with wind over tide so going down channel in a westerly is not on. I try to go in an easterly but the usual stopping point at Ilfracombe is no use to me - I would be right out in the entrance with no shelter at all. Lundy is no use either. And by the time I get to Padstow I might as well continue round.

So where can I stop en route in say and easterly 4 or 5? Behind Bull point for example? Combe Martin strikes me as pretty limited swinging room. Past Hartland maybe? Anybody tried any of the less usual places?

my draft is 6ft

never spoken to anyone who has used jenny's cove. apparently its very tight / restricted

but you should be able to anchor close in in shelter in the bay south of bull point. am just wondering if anyone has done it.

Lynmouth, Woody Bay or Croyde Bay. I seem to remember Lynmouth was lumpy though, Woody Bay, not much room but Croyde Bay was safe with good shelter from the hills.

Used Jenny Cove on several occasions no problem regarding room my boat was 32ft with 5 ft draft. But why waste an Easterly just keep going and take advantage of a fair wind.

Because best I have ever done to falmouth was 28 hours which is a long slo.g .Padstow is a gluepot.

Bude is a poor option, potential of big swell just off the entrance breaking across the fairway. Got stuck behind the lock gates for a week some years ago.

I was on the theory of a quick stop with an easterly wind if there was too much south in the wind for Lundy..It is true though, there aren't many options when heading West with an easterly blow.I think i would be tempted to do one hit if the weather was good but after about 15-20 hrs single handed is pretty hard work/boring.

I anchored at jenny Cove on the east of Lundy in an easterly blow. Yes good shelter by the cliffs in an easterly but it is deep water until you are very close in. The wind shifted overnight and in the morning I was rather close in as I had lots of chain out and I did not enjoy the short time between lifting the anchor and clearing the lee shore. Plenty of potential for ending up on the rocks!

Lundy would be my choice, and if there was a change of wind direction, you could always sail around the island to find shelter on the landing beach.

I have now been to Lundy in an easterly. Jenny's cove is not great. There was still a westerly swell despite having had 3 days of easterly winds. I needed to get very close in to get into shallow water and this left me with catabatic gusts coming down the cliff. Not a great night
