hi looking for some inspiration on the ways and means of making some removable fiddle rails for book shelves. thinking in term of using 10mm round brass bar/tube but need ideas for good easy end clips/ brackets / supports that will hold bar in place yet allow easy removal when needed.

Also with this in mind does anyone know where to find these in brass (not plated)at a reasonable price

TIA

The one you illustrated is intended for 15mm wide oval rail, and is invariably cast in zinc alloy, sometimes brass plated. They're so cheap, and so easy to replace, that I can't see that a brass plated finish would be a problem.

Hi, I used a couple of those end brackets when I made a rail in the heads for drying wet oilies. I used a length of s/s tube-7/8 inch-and squeezed the ends oval to suit. For a bookshelf some dowel shaped and stained may be a better solution.

thanks for the replies fella's. the need or assumed need for 'brass' units was because they are to be fitted to Oak so couldn't countenance any ferrous corrosion. But as said if made from alloy monkey metal then maybe not such a problem and very cheap t' boot

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread, but I am also now in to book shelf fiddle improvements, and I am quite keen on getting some of those wee fittings illustrated in Ean's post above - are they from B & Q?
Or any other similar type of end fittings for fiddle rails?

Hi Bajan, I bought some off ebay as much much cheaper than B&Q. Never did find solid brass one's so made do with plated one's. used hollow hexagonal brass tube again off ebay (stair rods!) as the rail and fitted sprung ball catches in the end(yet again off ebay for pennies1) to act as 'détente' balls in one of the countersunk screw holes in the fitting!..... works very nicely if i say so myself!
