Just returned from York, the Ouse was full of debris up to Cawood, never seen it so bad,Called in the River Derwent,a place I like very much.Went into Goole docks with the intention of leaving on the first locking next day, punch the tide to Trent end but there was such a bad forecast of thunder and lightening and torrential rain that I decided to go through the canals. What a bad decision!! Got to Thorne OK went thro, the lock and hit weed. This is the weed that was at Keadby lock last year. The leaves are similar to water cress about as big as finger nails. It floats on the surface with roots a couple of inches long.It was about an inch thick spread from bank to bank and the bow wave causes it to pile up about 5 or 6 inches deep but unfortunately the rest of the weed fills the gap.I had to empty my weed filter about every 400 yards.Unless you have skin cooling I cannot recommend using this canal at the present time.Wish I had gone Trent End way.As it happened the bad weather came in the night and gave 6ft of fresh at Cromwell overnight.
