Hi Folks,

Does anyone know where I can get sheet gasket material from? Preferably by mail order via the web.
I'm sure it must be quite straightforward to make engine gaskets and a lot more economical than buying them from Volvo.

Regards....................Andrew

I assume you have searched the web. Your local agricultural merchant/engineer might be your best bet but you will find it difficult to source composite material, the volvo stuff is usually best grade.

Here

Automotive gasket material in 0.5 X 1.0m sheets
Mail order, website etc.

"Don't advise trying to make a head gasket if that's what you have in mind "

I'd be interested in why not? The head gasket on my Bukh is a simple sheet of gasket material with a few holes punched in it. We carry sheets of varying thicknesses for 'ordinary' gaskets aboard while cruising and always make our own.

So I too would like to get hold of some head gasket sheeting, but the the company in the link Cliff gave doesn't appear to do it.

Does anyone know the manufacturer of the head gasket sort of stuff?

Try Here for copper foil / shim gasket material for head gaskets.
Do be sure to use the correct thickness as the bump clearance is critical. Personally I would buy a pukka gasket and keep onboard for emergencies rather than try to bodge a head gasket. - your call!

Hi Cliff,

Thanks for the link, I'll give 'em a call and see if they do the stuff I want. I carry a brand new spare head gasket aboard whilst cruising anyway, it's just that I'd like to be able to knock out another if the situation arose God forbid!!

I understand the need for accuracy re the gasket thickness perfectly- I just need to source the correct (composition) stuff!! It seems amazing to me that one can't buy it from any motor factors as you can other types of gasket material.

It's almost like there's a conspiracy between the gasket manufacturers and the engine makers!!

Ah well, I'll search on.

If you examine a head gasket you will see it generally has fire rings round the cylinder holes and copper "grommets" round oilways and waterway holes, none of which even the best DIY "engineer" could reproduce. There is no conspiracy - just simple economics - a motor factor would not have any demand for head gasket material.

The Bukh head gasket USED to have such 'rings' etc (I remember them well!!) but they've long gone. The gasket now is merely a plain piece of material with the relevant holes punched out, something anyone with fairly basic skills could achieve.

Ok, maybe an ordinary motor factors is not the place, but there MUST be a manufacturer of this stuff somewhere in the UK surely?

Anyway, I want some, so as I said earlier I'll keep plugging away. If I do come up with a solution, I'll post the details here.

It's called "Hallite" and is not usually available from your usual motor factors. It is available in various thicknesses and can usually be got from engineering suppply people. We source it locally from AA Components - they have a fleet of vans supplying garages and engineering shops nationwide. They do post stuff too. They are in Stirling, Central Scotland and the phone number is 01786 474263. If a moron answers the phone just ask for someone else (!!!)

Hope that helps.
