Left Conwy for a 8 day cruise and loaf about and noticed that I had lost a couple knts and port engine working harder than normal. Sitting at anchor off Ynys Meibion I discerned the obvious cause. Starboard leg outer C4 missing. I put that on maybe 200nm ago with all new spacers etc and made sure it was torqued down good and solid.

How on earth does one shed a prop? Ive bought a complete set of B5s delivered to Victoria Dock for both legs and will make my way back at raggie speed for a lift and hold Thursday.
Anybody have any ideas why I might have shed a prop and better yet have a C4 outer to complement my set.

PeteM? I know you expressed an interest in these previously, any thoughts?

Is this the cone and locknut arrangement on a DP drive? Happened to me once.
Apparently the torque of the lock nut is important, too tight it shears off, too loose it can vibrate out either way the cone can follow then the prop.
Torqued carefully after that and it didn't happen again.

Yep DP drive. Sods law its on our first mini cruise of the season. 2 day loss out of our 8 is a sizeable chunk. Could be worse I suppose.

Never had it myself but the previous owner of a boat of mine had. Was told by volvo engineer is overtightening can also cause this. If it is a cone with the small bolt inside the manual specifically mentions the tightening torque. on my Targa 40 the cones where the big bolt version and there no torque was specified but just tight.

Well up in the slings at VD today with Stokesea, changing props. I managed to officiate then raid his new funbox. He hasn't spoken to me since so I must be good management material. :encouragement:
