Shearwater 22\' Sloop

Hello everyone.
I have just bought a Shearwater Sloop - a 22' Marine ply on Oak yacht. It was apparently built by Dell Quay Marine in the early 1960's. I've already contacted them for information - but unfortunately nothing has been built there since the '70's - and there is no-one I can contact.
So... if anyone out there knows where else I might be able to look, please let me know. Thanks
George

Re: Shearwater 22\' Sloop

The Dell Quay Yard has changed hands a number of times since they last built Shearwaters, but Daytons Guide "Yachts of Yesteryear" lists them as follows: LOA 22', LWL 18'6", Beam 7', Draft 4ft, Displacement 3360lbs, Ballast 1120lbs, Sail area (Fractional rig) 200sq ft, Construciton Cold moulded marine ply. Remarks: A lifting keel hard chine plywood construction design of the earluy sixties. Draft keel up 2ft.

Hope that helps a bit.

It's a start at least! I'll keep on looking for pictures/plans etc, so if you come across anything I be delighted to know.

Re: Shearwater 22\' Sloop

Hello Terry,
Thanks for the reply - made my day!
She's called 'Caravella'but I haven't picked her up yet - we're going this Saturday. We are based in Essex and sail from West Mersea. I currently own a Corribee bilge keeler, which is a lovely boat. Truth be told, I bought the trailer and Caravella came with it... I was interested in the basic construction, as there is a split in the wood where the stem runs towards the keel. looks like it has had a scarfe at sometime in the past, so I want to repair it well, before I think about seeing if she floats!
All that said, she looks like a beautiful boat, traditional lines (and made of wood too..) Do you have access to any plans/drawing that you can share please? If not let's keep talking
Thanks again,
George
p.s. Couldn't agree more with your sign-off

Re: Shearwater 22\' Sloop

Shes one of mine by the sound of it . /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I sold her to a policeman who kept it in Chichester . He sailed it back from Cornwall . If its the "caravella " I had she has Two windows in the higher coach roof facing forward and a pronounced "Barrel" curve to the roof .Other features which makes my Caravella unique is that she had a double berth forward with a 3/4 width bhd making the entry to the forward bunk on the portside instead of midships. a Quite a history with that boat if its the same one .

Cheers

Terry.

Re: Shearwater 22\' Sloop

Hello Terry.
Sounds like that's her! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gifNot exactly a common name for a start. From the pictures I've seen, she's laid out with a 3/4 bulkhead on the starboard side, windows as described, and a lovely curve to the coachroof. I'll take some more pictures when we've got her back safely to West Mersea and I can e-mail them on if you like?
As for the repair I have to do on the split - any advice would be gratefully received.
Thanks again for the info Terry.
talk to you later,
Best regards,
George
