Traveling on a fast cat ferry from Rosslare to Fishguard yesterday and standing outside near the stern studying the wake from this 30kt beast the question popped in my mind, Has any of you ever tried taking your raggies through such a wake I mean the white milky stuff?
I would imagine it must be a good thrill providing one wasent too close to the stern of the ferry when crossing it.

Having seen the two 50' jets of spray thrown out by those things I would pass a couple of hundred yards behind if I had to. There is a big wave thrown off them too that travels for miles. I have been on a mooring in Holyhead when the wash came in off one.

It happens about 20 mins after the boat passes, so you have forgotten all about it. Suddenly the boat rears up in the air about 4', heels over at about 30deg & then drops down & whips across to heel the other way & rolls violently for a few minutes. Given that one is relaxed on a mooring with a cup of tea in hand & no sails up to steady the motion the effect is devastating & extremely dangerous & frightening. As mentioned elsewhere, it is one of many reasons why we don't "do" Holyhead any more.

We always seem to arrive or leave the marina at the same time as the Stena HSS ferry in Dun Laoghaire. It's not as exciting as you would hope it to be. There's a decent swell off them further out, but only the fast mobos and RIBs seem to get any real fun out of the wake.
