Sad that it was killed but if the experts say it was necessary then so be it.

It was already badly injured by having a fishing hook embedded in it's mouth that prevented it from hunting and feeding. Collateral damage from 'sport' fishing (and a slow grim demise). Also the likely reason it had come in so close.
