Nautical terms in this respect probably means having a clue what you're talking about in given area? Lived in the Algarve for 19 years, marina wise Portimao would loose above all others.

Happy to keep sharing, anyone in the Balearics? Anchorage down from Pollensa called Cala Sa Calobra - truly magical :)

Off to buy more rolos and not sharing..

Do I get to share your rolos.

Not sure if you are for or against Portimao?

Portimao? Good well run marina but the fishing boats rushing by can be a problem & there is a surge in heavy weather. Although it is called Portimao, it is a bus ride from town & really should be called Praia de Roche Marina. Praia de Roche is touristy but very family friendly & has a fabulous beach.

Albufeira is another good marina but from a live-aboard aspect quiet - excellent place to leave a boat.

So horses for courses.

Actually think the OP was thinking in terms of anchorages rather than marinas, in which case Alvor comes to mind - busy but always room.:D

Not a fan of Portimao as its a long way to walk into town, especially in the very wet months we had there. Agree with Alvor and many other lovely bays with little or no ammenities :)

Albufeira and Lagos marinas have more going on around them. From albufeira you then have the delights of Praia de Gale etc and the best piri chicken places in Guia - yum!

You're absolutely correct that the OP is about anchorages, I only commented on the marinas as if its for a winter destination then people probably want proximity to a town.

Spot on

Agree - now can I have a rolo

Look how strong a signal you are getting from what's on offer.

Get inSSIDer from MetaGeek at http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/. It's free and it does a site survey, showing you the actual strength of all the wifi signals around you and which channels they're using - that's important because you'll get better service from a hotspot that's not using the same channel as lots of others.

Portimao is a great place to winter, not Lagos by any means but if you want to be organised every day then Lagos is a good place to be. Portimao is only 15 mins walk away from the main town, there are cheap buses outside the marina and the 'Strip' is a great place for all the 'Brit' stuff you miss if you are that way inclined.

As for where to go and what to do and fantastic anchorages, the cruising /liveabord community is normally very open and accommodating to all (there are some small minded groups of people who hide info), but 90% don't, and they will show where to go, how to get there and how it works when you get there. Just ask away, the real 'cruisers' will always tell you (as it's how they found out), but selfish fools won't, but then you get them in every walk of life!

Anybody who allows themselves to be 'organised every day' deserves what they get. This is not the fault of Lagos town or marina.

I live in Norfolk but I don't have to talk like a turnip or **** my sister.

+1. Tons of marinas offer daily "hi-di-hi" events, urgh my worst nightmare as usually ex-pat Britsville.. Each to their own!

(Also from Norfolk, don't speak like a turnip but can drive a combine harvester and sing the song!) :)

Always happy to accept information from a site or people who've actually been there, I actively switch off when people tell of places heard of through brothers cousin twice removed.. Ok, exaggeration on the twice removed but I bet lots of you get what I mean and even funnier when you've actually spent ages there :)
