Hi I have finally decided to make the berth in my aft cabin fit to sleep on, it's 22 years old and very uncomfortable, is it possible to buy a memory foam matteres and cut it to shape, has anybody done this?
Mike

Yes, get the foam off ebay, width to suit as a rectangle, cut to shape with electric carving knife, works a treat. Sew up a cover from old bed sheet.

+1 Just used an electric carving knife to do ours (I say we, I mean the other half) I was supprised how well it worked. Failing that you can get the 'proper' hot foam cutter :)

There's a couple of "boaty" suppliers of memory foam toppers or a mattress - but they are IMO way too expensive.

I bought two 2 inch toppers with fitted covers from www.memoryfoamwarehouse.co.uk found them helpful, efficient and cost effective.

Can be off the shelf sizes or made to measure.

And if you want to encapsulate the memory foam? Rather than messing with bottom sheets we simply cut down a duvet cover to suit. Leaving an aperture underneath, for removal. SWMBO is handy with sewing I might add :)

If you need to stick pieces of memory foam together then an aerosol can of contact adhesive works well.

After years of stiff necks and bad backs, I also thought I'd treat my boat bed to some memory foam.

Are you accustomed to memory foam? I don't think it works for everybody; great for those who sleep in one position, not so good for people who tend to shift about like myself.
In the end, I kept the original foam mattresses and installed a FROLI bed spring system instead and what a difference!
The gap gives a bit of ventilation under the foam which is very handy on a boat and its every bit as comfortable as the expensive mattress I have at home. It also comes with these red clips that allow you to adjust the firmness in key places until it's just right for you.

If you're unfamiliar with FROLI, here's the video:
Mine came in box from a camping shop, I'm afraid I can't remember which one. It took about an hour to fit in my V birth.

I sold my campervan on the strength of a memory foam mattress! Never mind the rest of the interior, the MOT, The engine & service history etc. Right at the beginning, the guys wife climbed on the bed I had made from a redundant memory foam mattress, and promptly told her husband "Yes' we're buying this" (They had looked at a few prior with conventional bedding). I used an extremely sharp stanley knife and sliced through it like I was cutting meat.
